As a chubby gay dude who loves the sun, I was spending money on mass produced swim briefs every year. But most of the time, the brief didn’t make me feel sexy, especially not compared to the person in the marketing materials. Why was I, and all of my friends, buying swimwear made in China, sold from Australia, and designed and marketed toward super built or super thin straight people, with occasional queer washed designs released for Pride promotions? Gross. There had to be a better way to spend my hard earned dollars!
That’s where Miroslava and Violeta come in! This mother daughter clothier team are masters of their craft! In fact, Miroslava has a long, long history of allyship with the LGBTQ+ community- dating back to her days in Mexico. She currently operates a thriving wedding dress business (check out @ValentinasCloset). Violeta, her daughter, and I have been collaborating on projects for years, so when I approached them with this idea to make a few swim briefs for me and Winston, she was so onboard that the magic just flowed and we ended up with more than just a couple of cute swim briefs for ourselves. Add in the mad photography skills of Winston Elliott, introduce the prints to our fab queer friends turned models… add in a few glasses of rosé...and our first swim line is born.
